Rod Shop is one of the most recognizable and iconic drag race teams in the history of the sport. Gil Kirk opened the Rod Shop performance parts stores in the mid sixties, and then teamed up with Jim Thompson to sponsor many of the local racers in the Columbus Ohio area. In 1971 Gil negotiated a major sponsorship with the Chrysler Corporation, and with that backing, the Rod Shop would field a major team of Dodge drag cars in almost every category in drag racing. The Rod Shop Dodge paint scheme was always a fan favorite, and still is to this day.

The Rod Shop 1971 Challenger won the Pro Stock World Championship in 1971 with Mike Fons behind the wheel. Round after round of racing, Mike trailered the best of the best on his quest for the Championship crown.
